Jersey Joe Walcott

Jersey Joe Walcott (1914 – 1994)

Arnold Raymond Cream, best known as Jersey Joe Walcott, was an American professional boxer who competed from 1930 to 1953. He held the NYSAC, NBA, and The Ring heavyweight titles from 1951 to 1952, and broke the record for the oldest man to win the title, at the age of 37. That record would hold for over three decades until it was eventually broken in 1994 by 45-year-old George Foreman.

Walcott became the heavyweight world champion in his fifth shot at the title, knocking out Ezzard Charles in the seventh round on 18 July 1951.

Walcott had previously fought two world championship title bouts each against the legendary Joe Louis and against Ezzard Charles.

In his first title bout, against Joe Louis on 5 December 1947 in Madison Square Garden, Walcott lost on points in an extremely controversial decision. Walcott dropped Louis in both the first and the fourth rounds and many felt that Walcott deserved to win. There was a rematch immediately after, in which Walcott lost by KO in the eleventh round. Walcott fought his third and fourth heavyweight title bouts against Ezzard Charles, in 1949 and again in 1951. Walcott lost by unanimous decision both times.

Walcott lost his title in his very first title defense, against Rocky Marciano, who knocked him out in the thirteenth round. He lost the rematch as well, this time by KO in the very first round.

Despite holding the world heavyweight title for a relatively short period of time, Walcott was regarded among the best heavyweights in the world during the 1940s and 1950s.

Walcott had a boxing record of 49 wins in 70 fights, with 20 losses and 1 draw.

Jersey Joe Walcott was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990.
