Canelo vs Golovkin 3

Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin 3

The third encounter between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin, billed as “The Trilogy,” was a super middleweight bout. The two had previously fought two middleweight bouts.

At the time, Canelo Alvarez was the undisputed super middleweight champion and holder of the WBA (Super), WBC, IBF and WBO titles, as well as the prestigious Ring Magazine belt. Gennady Golovkin was the middleweight champion and holder of the WBA (Super), IBF and IBO titles. The fight was held on 17 September 2022 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, with all of the super middleweight belts at stake.

The fight took place around 5 years after their first encounter, which ended in a highly controversial split draw (118-110 for Canelo, 115-113 for Golovkin and 114-114). At the time, many thought that Gennady Golovkin should have won and Adelaide Byrd’s clear preference for Canelo attracted a great deal of criticism. The rematch one year later was a very even fight. Canelo won by majority decision with the narrowest of margins (114–114, 115–113, 115–113).

By the time of the third encounter, Golovkin was already 40 years old. Alvarez, on the other hand, was 32 and in the prime of his boxing career. As a result, it came as no surprise that Alvarez was able to win the third match by unanimous decision (116–112, 115–113, 115–113).

The fight was broadcasted on DAZN to existing subscribers worldwide (with the exception of South America), and on DAZN in PPV in the US, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.
