The fight for the WBO super featherweight world championship took place at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York on 9 December 2017. Lomachenko and Rigondeaux are considered two of the best amateur boxers in history, with each boxer winning two Olympic gold medals. It was the first time that two Olympic champions, who each have won two Olympic gold medals, fought professionally against each other. Lomachenko won the fight by technical knockout (TKO), when Rigondeaux gave up after the sixth round.
